What Is Hypnotherapy?

Most people who come to hypnotherapy have questions about how the process works and what kind of change is truly possible. This page answers the most common questions so you can approach the work with clarity and confidence.

A clinically grounded approach to change that works directly with the subconscious mind and the nervous system.

What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured therapeutic process that uses a focused state of attention to access the subconscious mind. Unlike stage hypnosis, which is entertainment, clinical hypnotherapy is a legitimate evidence-informed practice used to address emotional patterns, behavioral cycles, and nervous system responses that have not responded to conventional approaches.

In a clinical hypnotherapy session, you remain fully aware and in control throughout. What changes is the level of your analytical engagement, allowing deeper emotional and subconscious patterns to become accessible. The process is collaborative, guided, and grounded in your consent at every step.

Hypnotherapy vs. Hypnosis

Confusion between hypnotherapy and hypnosis is common, and it is helpful to clarify the distinction. Stage hypnosis is a performance designed for entertainment, where participants typically volunteer to play along publicly. It is not related to therapeutic work.

Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured therapeutic intervention designed to access and reorganize patterns stored in the subconscious mind. The focused state used in clinical work is not unusual. It is similar to states people naturally enter throughout the day, such as becoming deeply absorbed in reading, driving a familiar route while on autopilot, or concentrating so fully that everything else fades into the background. These are natural states of focused attention that hypnotherapy uses intentionally within a therapeutic context.

You remain fully aware and in control throughout the process. You cannot be made to do or say anything that goes against your values. Clinical hypnotherapy is guided by consent and nervous system safety from beginning to end.

What Hypnotherapy Feels Like

The experience of hypnotherapy is often simpler than people expect. It is not very different from states of focused attention you already experience in everyday life. It may feel similar to becoming absorbed in reading, driving a familiar route while your mind relaxes, or focusing so fully that everything else fades into the background.

You remain aware and in control throughout the session. Most people describe the experience as calm, focused, and deeply relaxing, while still being able to hear and respond at any time.

Why It Works When Other Methods Haven't

If you have spent time in therapy, read the books, and gained insight into your patterns but still find them repeating, you are not the exception. Many approaches primarily engage the conscious mind, where understanding and insight take place.

The conscious mind represents a small portion of mental activity, while the subconscious holds many of the patterns that shape behavior, emotion, and automatic responses. Awareness, insight, and intention operate at the conscious level, but the patterns that often need to shift are maintained at the subconscious level.

Approaches that focus only on conscious insight can build understanding, but understanding alone does not always reach the level where patterns were formed. Hypnotherapy works more directly with the subconscious processes that maintain those patterns, allowing change to occur at the level where the pattern actually lives.

My Approach

Most hypnotherapy follows a top-down structure: work with the mind first, then the body. My sessions combine that with a bottom-up approach, meaning I work with the body and the nervous system at the same time. This matters because many of the patterns people carry are not stored in narrative memory. They are stored in the body, in the subconscious, and in the nervous system as automatic responses. Talking about them can build awareness. Reaching them requires a different kind of access.

In my work, I integrate clinical hypnotherapy with Internal Family Systems, somatic awareness, and nervous system regulation. Rather than following a fixed protocol, I work with what you bring to each session. The first 10 minutes are yours to speak freely. The rest of the session is guided, collaborative, and structured around what the nervous system and the subconscious are showing in that specific session

I am often able to identify key patterns early in the process, not only through what you say but through how your nervous system and body respond as you speak. The work then focuses directly on those underlying patterns rather than remaining only at the level of discussion. As a result, many clients begin to notice meaningful shifts sooner than they expected.

1. Will I be conscious during hypnosis? Will I lose control?

You remain fully conscious and aware throughout the session. Hypnotherapy is not sleep or loss of control. What changes is your level of analytical focus. Your values, your judgment, and your ability to end the session at any point remain completely intact. Clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative process grounded in consent and trust.

Traditional talk therapy primarily engages the conscious mind. You build awareness, process experiences verbally, and develop understanding. Hypnotherapy works at the level of the subconscious, where many patterns are actually stored. These two approaches are not opposites. I often integrate cognitive strategies into sessions. But hypnotherapy provides a level of access that conversation-based approaches alone typically cannot reach.

Yes, and this is one of the areas where clinical hypnotherapy is especially relevant. The approach I use is trauma-informed and works at the pace of the nervous system, not the pace of the protocol. We do not force material to surface. The goal is always to increase your sense of safety, not to overwhelm it. If you are concerned about your specific history, we can discuss it in the free consultation before the first session.

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, history, and how your system responds to the work. Some clients notice meaningful shifts within the first few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing work to support deeper integration. The process is not rushed or fixed. It is guided by your pace, your nervous system, and the changes that emerge over time.
